Car depreciation is a horrible thing and unfortunately it kicks in the moment the vehicle is driven off the forecourt. Some cars can lose up to 80% of their value in just 4 years while others cling onto their starting price much better than this.
If you’re looking to purchase a car that retains its value then you should consider one of the below:
German cars are notorious for holding their value and the Audi A3 shows that in abundance with their mid-range vehicle holding on to 70% of its initial price by the time the vehicle hits three years old with around 30k on the clock. That’s not just impressive, it is absolutely phenomenal!
Although not quite as impressive as the A3, the Honda CR-V is great at retaining its value, with prices around 65% after 36 months and only a slight drop to 50% after 60 months of regular use. The long 5 year warranty and outstanding reliability of Honda is a driving force behind the price, so expect newer models to follow this trend.
As a dedicated work horse, pickup trucks are designed to run for pretty much ever. It is because of this that the Hilux maintains its value so well even after long periods of time – even a 10 year old model with 100k or more on the odometer can still retail for around 20% of its initial price. That’s a figure that’s unheard of from other vehicles.
While most high level luxury vehicles tend to depreciate very rapidly the same is not true of the Porsche Cayenne, which can maintain up to 84% of its value after 3 years or 30,000 miles. Great news if you’re looking to sell, not such great news if you wanted a cheap second hand Cayenne.
Another Toyota in this list, showing just how well the Japanese manufacturer produces reliable vehicles. This answer to the Range Rover is an extremely capable car both on and off the road, making it extremely popular and in demand – hence the price retention.
Another German car on the board and again another SUV. In recent years SUVs have dramatically increased in popularity helping to maintain their price. The X3 is a particularly luxurious vehicle with a smart interior, good running costs and stylish exterior all working to keep it in high demand. Expect to find a three year old X3 still carrying around 60% of its initial cost.
A few years ago Skoda were the laughing stock of the motoring industry, now however things have changed. Skoda have proved to be reliable with good styling and great practicality. This all leads to one thing – less depreciation! Top package Skoda Yetis can retail for up to 70% after three years.
The only British car in this list and again another box ticked for luxury SUVs. The Evoque is arguably the most stylish SUV on the market and there’s typically a waiting list of up to 6 months every time new plates are released. Because of such high demand in both the new and used market, you won’t find a three year old Evoque selling for less than 68% of the showroom price.
The only sports car on this list and it’s a nippy two-seater that’s extremely lacking in practicality, comfort or running costs. For this reason you may think that the Exige would depreciate very quickly, but in actual fact it retains much of its value due to the sporty handling and awesome styling that enthusiasts love. After three years you can expect to receive around 59% of the car’s purchase price.
While it may just seem to be another small, modern hatchback to the general public the awesome styling and great economy make the 500 a very popular car in the used market. For this reason you can expect to pick up a three year old model for around 67% of its initial price, excellent news if you’re looking to sell.
