How to Upgrade to a Practical & Economical Family Car

Family Car

There comes a point in everyone’s life when you need to give up your hatchback or coupe and enter the world of proper adult cars. This change is typically associated with kids and the need to be far more practical, so that should lessen the blow of trading your sporty roadster for 7 seater cars with sliding doors.

What do you need?

They say that after your second child it just gets easier. Well ‘they’ have clearly never tried to load three screaming kids into the back of a VW Polo then have they! God forbid if you only have a three door car, which makes this task neigh on impossible. When looking for a new family car you will need to consider:

  • Size – is there room in the boot for everything you need? Have you got plenty of stowaways and cubbyholes?
  • Seats – are there enough seats for everyone? Think long term and always leave room for one or two more people – i.e. a 7 seater car for a family of 5 has a 2 seat leeway, great for friends, pets or grandparents.
  • Doors – is it a five door vehicle? Can you quickly and easily access the backseats? Cars with sliding doors are great for families as they open up much further and you don’t have to worry about knocking other cars.
  • Engine – having a big engine in a family car is essential as these are typically heavier vehicles, but big doesn’t mean they don’t have to be uneconomical. Try and look for a 1.8 petrol or a 2litre diesel with low CO2 emissions and good mileage.
  • Safety – last but definitely not least, how safe is this vehicle? If you’re going to be driving you, your partner and your kids around you want something that will protect you in a crash.

All of these are boxes that need to be ticked when looking to upgrade to a bigger family car. If the vehicle doesn’t hit every single one of those points then you may want to continue looking for your perfect car.

Two Cars or One?

Are you planning on getting rid of your car or do you want to run two at the same time? There are benefits to each option, but it will depend strongly on your individual circumstances, finances and practical needs. Having a small car and a large car together can be very efficient if you are going to do a lot of driving with just one or two people in the car, it also allows for much greater logistical options – ideal when you have several kids to run around.

Funding your New Car

Often you will find that large cars tend to carry a bigger price tag than hatchbacks and other small cars. This can be a difficulty when it comes to buying a practical family car, but luckily there are several ways that you can purchase a new vehicle.
